BEIRUT — On Saturday, Hezbollah confirmed the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, during a significant Israeli airstrike on Beirut.
The Israeli military carried out a targeted operation that hit more than 140 Hezbollah positions, specifically targeting infrastructure situated beneath residential buildings. The attack caused widespread destruction, flattening several structures in the densely populated southern suburbs of the capital.
Arab media reported that the IDF employed “bunker-busting” bombs in an escalation of the conflict. The ongoing bombardment has forced thousands of residents to flee their homes, seeking refuge in the streets of Beirut. Hezbollah’s confirmation of Nasrallah’s death marks a critical turning point in the conflict, with further developments expected as the international community closely monitors the situation in Lebanon.
In July, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, with the group blaming Israel for the attack, which also claimed the life of one of his bodyguards. Iran’s Khamenei vowed “harsh punishment” for Israel in response. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu did not confirm involvement but emphasized recent actions against Iranian proxies, warning of consequences for any aggression.
